MINDFULNESS BASED COGNITIVE THERAPY

 

 

Introduction

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is a psychotherapy which is used to treat depression. This therapy is the assimilation of both cognitive behavioural therapy methods and meditative mindfulness. It helps the patient to manage the negative thoughts and feelings and achieve relief from distress. This therapy helps in allowing the mind to move towards the conscious emotional processing from the automatic thought pattern that is disturbing the mind. The purpose of the study is to present a review of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Analysis of the process of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy

The therapy is meant for the depressive thoughts that come in the mind of the patient. In MBCT these thoughts and feelings are considered as memory-based events rather than facts. Along with that while providing interventions it is also presumed that the minds are generators of enormous thoughts. For a certain topic, the mind can develop thousands of ideas and thoughts at a time. Thirdly it is considered that the mind can develop positive and negative thoughts simultaneously and thus they are not able to produce favourable thoughts every time. These considerations are the gateway of reoccurrence of the depressive thoughts in a person.

 Mindfulness heals depression

MBCT makes a person aware of the negative thoughts and helps in skillfully dealing with them. It is an advantage for those people who had three or more than three episodes of depression. On the other hand, cognitive behavioural therapy is useful for dealing with mental issues and addictions. Mindfulness works on depression with the help of focusing on selective attention, focusing on the current situation, decreasing rumination, increasing decentering and enabling self-compassion in a depressed person. Metacognition and decentering help in recognizing thoughts as thoughts rather than facts. Along with that, it sets the individual from the feeling of being compelled to and act. It subsequently helps the patient to react more skillfully rather reacting reflexively. Self-compassion helps in the acceptance of thoughts without self-criticism. It reduces negative feelings and prevents negative emotions. Along with that self-compassion is equally helpful in attenuating negative reactions and encourages self-esteem. 

 MBCT works as monotherapy and neuroimaging study. The neuroimaging study is based on fMRI and MRI. FMRI helps in monitoring the actual activity of the brain rather than considering the anatomical presence of different lobes of the brain. It looks into the most active part during the working memory maintenance period of a depressed person and thus works on targeting the activity.

 The Health Enhancement Program is considered while providing an MCBT. It includes the physical activity and functional movement of the person. Music therapy and nutrition-based education are also provided to the patient for better recovery.

Conclusion

Contrarily it can be stated that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy exercises on the negative thoughts and provides the way for treating them with the introduction of self-awareness and skills. The skill training programs help address the vulnerability of major depressive episodes.
